Acceptable Composting Materials

  • Fruit and vegetable scraps (including rinds & cores)
  • Leftover or uneaten food
  • Items made from flour; bread, noodles, pizza crust, pretzels
  • Grains; rice, barley, oatmeal, flax
  • Avocado pits (chopped up so they don’t sprout)
  • Candy (crushed or chopped), cookies, cake
  • Cereal
  • Paper
  • Chips & Crackers
  • Coffee grounds & filters
  • Egg shells (dry & crushed)
  • Herbs & spices
  • Loose leaf tea & tea bags
  • Nuts & shells (excluding walnuts)
  • Pasta sauce or tomato paste
  • Popcorn & un-popped, burnt kernels
  • Spoiled tofu & tempeh
  • Seaweed, kelp, or nori
  • Stale pumpkin, sunflower or sesame seeds (chopped up so they don’t sprout)
  • Wine corks (chopped up to decompose better)
  • Jelly, jam or preserves
  • Previously approved yard waste items such as twigs, leaves, grass clippings, plant trimmings and garden materials

Unacceptable Composting Materials

  • Cooked or raw meat, or meat waste such as bones, fat, gristle, skin
  • Cooked or raw fish or fish waste
  • Dairy products such as yogurt, cheese, butter, sour cream
  • Grease or oil of any kind
  • Liquids
  • Plastic, twist ties, twine, lids, etc…
  • Energy or protein bars
  • Wax paper
  • Twigs larger than 1/4″ thick
  • Flower pots/planter pots

•••Some foods can’t be composted because they break down too slowly and imbalance the structure of other food waste and vegetation. Some also more easily attract rodents and scavenging animals, and are not accepted for that reason. Please pay close attention to the acceptable vs unacceptable items list, and when in doubt, give us a call! •••
